On May 23, Tea House HADA collaborated with GOLDWIN Seoul to present a Shincha Tea Ceremony as part of GOLDWIN Field Work: Transition.
GOLDWIN Field Work: Transition is an experiential program that explores the relationship between the body, the environment, and clothing. The May edition focused on the subtle shifts in bodily awareness that accompany the transition into early summer.
Structured around three stages—Preparation, Performance, and Recovery—participants completed an approximately 8-kilometer trail run, experiencing how the body gradually awakens to the changing season through movement.
Within this flow of transition, the Shincha Tea Ceremony served as both a quiet prelude to movement and a moment of restoration afterward, inviting participants to reconnect with the subtle changes in body and mind.
At the beginning of the ceremony, each participant was given a ‘Bodeumi’ tea bowl to accompany them throughout the entire experience.
True to its name—to embrace—the bowl is designed to gently hold both tea and the person who drinks it. As it is lifted to the lips, it naturally narrows the field of vision, creating a quiet boundary between oneself and the surrounding world. Within that intimate moment, attention turns inward, allowing one to become fully present to the flow of energy as it gathers, settles, and gently releases.
PREPARATION
Before the run, a cup of Hadong Hwagae Green Tea gently awakened bodies that still carried the coolness of the morning, preparing participants for movement with quiet clarity.
PERFORMANCE
As the trail run unfolded, Japanese Sencha was slowly extracted over ice using the traditional Kōridashi method, patiently developing its sweetness and concentrated umami.
RECOVERY
After the run, participants were welcomed with the deeply concentrated umami of the chilled Kōridashi Sencha, whose vivid flavors sharpened the body's awareness after exertion.
The ceremony concluded with a bowl of Jeju Matcha, accompanied by a seasonal wagashi titled "Early Summer Breeze." Together, they marked a gentle transition into rest and recovery.
It was a privilege for Tea House HADA to accompany participants as they observed, experienced, and recorded the subtle sensations of their bodies throughout the program. Through the rhythm of movement, tea, and rest, the experience formed a quiet cycle—restoring balance, renewing vitality, and embracing the living energy of early summer as the season shifted. We hope the clarity, vitality, and quiet awareness shared that day will remain with each participant long after the experience has come to an end.
