Muju — The Ido Tea Bowl That Rests Nowhere

Dansan Kim Young-Tae of Gonmyeongyo

The Ido tea bowls created at Gonmyeongyo by ceramic artist Dansan Kim Young Tae embody the spirit of Muju—a state of dwelling nowhere and remaining unattached.

Rather than pursuing flawless symmetry or perfect refinement, each bowl bears the subtle traces left by earth, fire, and time. These marks allow the vessel to exist not merely as an object, but as a quiet record of time itself.

This exhibition explores the tranquil atmosphere created when different tea bowls and tea utensils come together in a single tea setting. A tea gathering is never shaped by one element alone. The cup that holds the tea, the flowers placed nearby, the surrounding light and air, and even the warmth of those who share the space gradually come together to form a serene landscape.

Through the works of Dansan Kim Young Tae of Gonmyeongyo, we invite you to discover the beauty of the Ido tea bowl and to experience a moment of quiet contemplation—where the lingering dialogue between ceramic and self gently unfolds.

Content

As an accompanying program to the exhibition "Muju: Dwelling Ceramics, Ido Chawan," we have prepared a special session with ceramic artist Kim Young-tae of Gonmyeongyo.

Join us to hear the artist's stories about his research into Sacheon's Sueulto (Water-Earthenware clay) firsthand, touch the actual Sueulto, and explore the entire process of how a single tea bowl is completed. This is an opportunity to share the journey of finding and handling materials, firing in a wood-fired kiln, and the consistent path of his work, all while enjoying tea.

We hope this session will be a chance for everyone to contemplate the form of ceramics that dwells in their hearts, tracing the history of earth, fire, and time, and understanding why so many people have been captivated by Ido Chawan for so long.

Additionally, seasonal new tea, matcha, and traditional confections will be served, allowing you to deeply experience the harmony of the artist's ceramics and tea.
