This semester, our Ceramic Studies series turns its focus to the tea bowls and ceramics of the Joseon Dynasty, exploring the aesthetic philosophy and ceramic traditions that shaped Korea's tea culture.

Together, we will trace the historical development of Buncheong ware and Joseon white porcelain, while examining the history, craftsmanship, and artistic sensibilities embodied in each tradition.

The course also explores the movement of Joseon potters before and after the Imjin War, and how their journeys fostered the exchange and mutual influence of Korean and Japanese ceramics and tea culture.

Nanbōroku is considered one of the foundational texts of Japanese tea ceremony, recording the words and actions of Sen no Rikyū through his disciple Nanbō Sōkei.

Focusing on the essence of the heart rather than formalities, the lecture reflects upon relationships with nature, neighbors, and oneself while exploring the quiet aesthetics of wabi-sabi and the spirit of “tea and Zen as one.”
